DSEX crosses 5,000-mark after 20 weeks

Dhaka stocks continued their winning streak for the fifth day on Sunday with the benchmark index crossing 5,000-mark for the first time in 20 weeks.
The DSEX index added almost 50 points or 1% to settle at 5,024, which is its highest since September 28 when it was 5,003. The index also saw the biggest single-day rise in several months.
Among other indices, the DSES index finished 15 points or 1.34% up to 1,150 and blue chip DS30 index gained 21 points or 1.24% to 1,748.
The rally was mainly led by banks, NBFI, pharmaceuticals, life insurance and telecommunications sectors, which increased more than 1% each. The sectors that saw selling pressures are mutual fund, general insurance and energy.
Gainers outshined losers as out of all the issues traded, 156 closed higher, 118 declined and 81 remained unchanged.
Participation of investors — both institutional and general — increased as the turnover increased by 2.6% to Tk843 crore. General insurance companies accounted for almost 20% of the total turnover.
Beximco was the most traded share with a turnover of Tk52.4 crore, making up 5.3% of the total turnover. It was followed by Republic Insurance, Lanka Bangla Finance, Fortune, Beximco Pharmaceuticals, Aamra Networks and IFIC Bank.
Debutant Dominage continued to rise as its share price was up by 9.78% to Tk24.7 a share. Aramit Cement has taken the lead in the top loser list, dropping almost 10%, taking cue for its negative earnings report.
