DSE gains Tk 5,000cr market cap in a week

Out of the five trading days last week, four sessions closed higher amid higher participation of general investors, pushing the country’s primary bourse to gain over TK 5,000 market capitalisation.
At the end of the week, the market capitalisation of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) stood at Tk 5,13,240 crore, which is Tk 5,131 crore more than the last working day of the previous week.
In the previous week, DSE’s market capitalisation increased by Tk 4,843 crore, resulting in Tk 9,974 crore addition in two weeks.
Also, along with an increase in the price of shares and units of most of the companies that participated in the transaction throughout the week, the index also increased.
Meanwhile, the benchmark index of DSE, the DSEX was up over 113 points, or 1.82 percent, to 6,355 at the end of the week.
Among other DSE indices, the shariah-based DSES increased by 24.23 points or 1.77 percent, and the blue-chip DS-30 rose by 47.30 points or 2.13 percent.
The DSE had a turnover of Tk 6,933 crore last week, which is Tk 4,095 crore or 144.26 percent more than the previous week. The increase in total transactions was due to the fact that only three business days were traded in the previous week.
On the second session of the week on August 22, turnover on the DSE climbed to a seven-month high of Tk 1,477.56 crore.
Then again on August 25, the last trading session of the week, turnover hit a 7.5-month high at Tk 1,777.45 crore.
This resulted in an average turnover on the DSE at Tk 1,386.78 crore per working day last week, which is Tk 440.55 crore or 46.56 percent more than the previous week.
A total of 389 companies participated in the share and unit transactions on the DSE last week. Among the companies, the share price increased by 191, declined by 114 and remained unchanged by 84.
Beximco Limited’s shares were the most traded on the DSE last week. During the week, the company’s share turnover was Tk 477.11 crore, which is 6.88 percent of the total turnover.
Shares of Orion Pharma came in second place with a turnover of Tk 345.69 crore followed by BSC, LafargeHolcim, Delta Life, IPDC Finance, Olympic Industries, Fortune Shoes, Malek Spinning and Eastern Housing.
Meanwhile, on the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), the overall index CASPI increased by 273 points or 1.48 percent to 18,642 during the week and Tk 168.43 crore worth of stocks were traded.
