The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has taken steps to procure rescue equipment and gears for the affected people in case there occur any earthquakes or other natural calamities in the country.
The equipment and gears would be bought under four packages applying the direct purchase method under Earthquake and other Disaster Search, Rescue Operations and Emergency Communication Equipment Procurement Project (Phase 3). It will cost the government Tk 188.96 crore.
According to the proposal, the project was approved at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on February 5, this year.
The total estimated cost of the project with full government funding is Tk 2,275.99 crore.
The equipment procured will be distributed among the Fire Service and Civil Defence, Armed Forces, Navy, Coast Guard, CPP, Red Crescent Society, Bangladesh Police, Disaster Management Department, RAB and BGB offices.
According to the approved DPP, the Disaster Management Department will be the implementing agency of the project while the collaborating agency will be Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory (BMTF) and Bangladesh Army.
Both the organisations will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief. BMTF is an organization run by the Bangladesh Army.
Officials hope that BMTF can play an important role in procuring equipment as per the specifications of the quality assurance coaches. The DPP said that the equipment will be procured directly through BMTF to ensure proper quality.
The project was approved as per a decision made at the ECNEC meeting. The decision holds the view that minimum rescue equipment should be supplied to the fire service stations at the upazila levels. In order to execute that decision, the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence Department sent a revised list of equipment as per their demand to ensure minimum rescue equipment at the fire service station at the upazila level as well.
