Raw Canvas Restaurant & Bar evades VAT worth Tk 1.65cr

The Raw Canvas Restaurant & Bar at the capital’s Gulshan has evaded VAT worth Tk 1.65 crore. The VAT Audit, Intelligence & Investigation Directorate unveiled the VAT evasion of this restaurant on Monday.

Though the Raw Canvas Restaurant and Bar is permitted to sell liquor, it was selling illegal liquor in huge quantity and evaded tax to the government.

the specific allegation, a VAT intelligence team led by Tanvir Ahemd, deputy director of the directorate, conducted the raid at the restaurant.

Relevant documents were seized and after initial investigation, it was found that the restaurant evaded tax to the government exchequer.

The restaurant has sold a total of Tk 61,010,821 by March 2020 to November 2021. As of the amount, the applicable VAT is Tk 7,957,933.

However, the restaurant has paid only Tk 549,619 to the government exchequer. To this point, it has evaded VAT worth Tk 7,408,314. And Tk 87,689 will be applicable as a 2 percent interest on the evaded amount of VAT.

Moreover, the restaurant was entitled to a supplementary duty worth Tk 8,842,148. But it has paid only Tk 190,135 as the supplementary duty. To this point, the restaurant has evaded supplementary duty worth Tk 8,652,013.

According to the law, the restaurant has to pay Tk 101,632 as interest – as a 2 percent interest per month on the evaded amount.

Furthermore, the restaurant has to pay Tk 37,404 and Tk 41,560 as VAT and supplementary duty, respectively, as it had a less amount of liquor stock.

to the investigation, the restaurant has evaded VAT worth Tk 7,445,718, supplementary duty worth Tk 8,883,708, and the interest is worth Tk 189,321. The outstanding evaded amount is Tk 16,518,747.

A case was filed in this regard and the documents were sent to the Dhaka North VAT Commissionerate.
