The third terminal at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), when completed, will double the airport’s annual passenger and cargo handling capacities, according to AKM Maksudul Islam, the project director of the third terminal.

He told a visiting Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association delegation that after completion of the terminal the airport will be able to handle 20 million travellers from the current 8 million and 5 lakh tonnes of cargo from the current 2 lakh tonnes.

The project director also shared with the BGMEA team, led by its President Faruque Hassan, also shared with the delegates about the features and amenities of the new terminal.

The visit took place on Thursday.

The delegation comprised BGMEA vice presidents Shahidullah Azim and Miran Ali, Director Asif Ashraf and former director Ashikur Rahman (Tuhin). Some high officials of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) were also present on the occasion.

The three-storey terminal building is being built over an area of 542,000 square meter having a floor space of 230,000 square meters with 115 check-in counters, 64 departure and 64 arrival immigration desks, respectively.

The world-class terminal equipped with modern amenities will provide all services under a single roof, ensuring seamless operations and comfort to the passengers.

The import cargo complex will be 27,000 square meters having a capacity of handling 273,470 tonnes per year.

The export cargo complex, with an area of 36,000 square meters, will have a capacity of 546,941 tonnes annually.

Besides, the parking space can accommodate 1,230 vehicles at a time. The terminal will have 27 baggage x-ray screeners, 11 body scanners, 25 central departure security screening, 12 boarding bridges, and 16 luggage belts.

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan said trade and businesses are expanding in Bangladesh, therefore, the demand for air cargo is also rising.
