8 edible oil refiners sued for ‘violating marketing rules’

Bangladesh Competition Commission has filed a case against eight edible oil refiners on a charge of violating rules regarding the marketing of cooking oil in the recent past.

The case was filed on Wednesday, an official of the Commission told the Business Insider Bangladesh on Thursday. 

City Edible Oil Limited (Teer), Bangladesh Edible Oil Limited (Rupchanda), Meghna and United Edible Oils Refinery Limited (Fresh), Bashundhara Oil Refinery Mill (Bashundhara), Shabnam Vegetable Oil Industries Limited (Pusti), S Alam Super Edible Oil Company Limited (S Alam), Prime Edible Oil Limited (Prime) and Globe Edible Oil Limited (Royal Chef).

Among them, notices have been sent to City Edible Oil, Bangladesh Edible Oil, Meghna and United Edible Oil and Bashundhara Oil to appear at the hearing on May 16, while the others have been sent notices to appear at the hearing on May 19, the official said.

The official added that after reviewing the report of the commission's investigation team, a meeting on Tuesday unanimously decided to file cases against each of the eight companies. As per the decision of the meeting, separate cases were filed against the institutions on Wednesday.

The eight companies have been charged under the Competition Commission Act for restricting or controlling the production, supply, market, technical development, investment or provision of services.

Under the act, if an organisation is found guilty, there is a provision to impose a fine of 1-10 percent on the amounts sales made by that company in the last three years.
