Gas prices hit new highs; to hurt people, businesses in tough time

The energy regulator has increased the gas prices for all types of consumers, be they households, industries, or restaurants, despite opposition from businesses and consumer protection groups.

Now this hike in gas prices will fuel inflation further as people are struggling to manage their livelihoods amid the rising prices of essentials, from energy to foods and transportation, according to the Consumers Association of Bangladesh.

The price has been increased 10.77 percent to Tk 1,080 for double burners, nearly 12 percent for large industries, and 10 percent for medium industries.

Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) acting chairman Abu Faruque announced on Sunday.

He came up with the announcement at a virtual press briefing at 3:00pm on Sunday.
