In terms of sending workforces abroad, Bangladesh stood third in the world after Pakistan and India in the last decade, according to a UN report released on Monday.
For 10 countries, the estimated net outflow of migrants exceeded 1 million over the period from 2010 through 2021, said the UN report.
In many of these countries, the fluxes were due to temporary labour movements, such as from Pakistan with a net flow of 16.5 million, India with 3.5 million, Bangladesh 2.9 million, Nepal 1.6 million and Sri Lanka 1 million, respectively.
In other countries, the outflows of migrants during this period were caused by insecurity. A number of 4.6 million people moved out of the Syrian Arab Republic, 4.8 million from Venezuela and 1 million from Myanmar due to a lack of physical safety.
All the countries, whether experiencing net inflows or outflows of migrants, should take steps to facilitate orderly, safe, regular and responsible migration, in accordance with the SDG target, according to the report.
