For the first time, a ship carrying 17 containers of apparel products from 27 factories left the Mongla port in Bagerhat on Thursday, a development that can help businesses save costs and time.
MV Maersk Nesna, a Panama-flagged vessel, carrying the goods, left the port for Poland at around 11am, Kalachand Sinha, deputy secretary (Board and Public Relations) of Mongla Port, told Business Insider Bangladesh on Thursday.
These containers were loaded from factories in Dhaka, Gazipur, Savar and Narayanganj and reached the port early on Thursday, he said.
Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa, chairman of the port, in an instant reaction said that the shipment of garment products using Mongla port is a new milestone for the port and a new window for the exporters.
This route is cost-effective for the users as the distance between Dhaka and Mongla port is only 170km, down from 260km between Dhaka and Chattogram port.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Padma Multipurpose Bridge on June 25 and it was opened to traffic next day.
