Turnover in the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) climbed to a seven-month high on Monday amid an upward trend in the index.

Guided by various market-friendly decisions taken by the market regulator and central bank, the Dhaka bourse has been enjoying higher participation of general investors recently.

Furthermore, the recent stability in the country’s foreign exchange is helping the capital market.

On Monday, DSE had a turnover of Tk 1,477.56 crore, which is Tk 419.80 crore more than the previous session.

This turnover is not only the highest turnover since the start of the Ukraine war but also the highest in seven months. Earlier, Tk 1,506.80 crore was traded on January 16.

Market watchers find this development as evidence that inactive investors are starting to buy shares.

Meanwhile, this amount is the ninth highest transaction this year. The highest turnover of this year was last January 11. Shares of Tk 1,976.88 crore were exchanged that day.

On the day, from the very beginning of trading, most of the shares started to rise. As time went by, more points were added to the index.

By the end of the session, along with increasing turnover, DSEX, the prime index of the DSE, went up by 40.67 points or 0.64 per cent to finish at 6,300. DSEX added 151 points in the past five trading days.

Among other indices, the shariah-based DSES rose by 7.43 points or 0.54 percent and the blue-chip DS-30 was up by 21.18 points or 0.95 percent.

As usual, the textile sector, which has been at the peak of interest for months, remained the top of the trade on the day. The total turnover in this sector was Tk 252.4 crore, which is 17.66 percent of the total turnover.

The miscellaneous sector was at the second position with Tk 204.12 crore turnover, followed by pharmaceuticals and chemicals sector at Tk 170.5 crore.

Shares of the 380 companies traded on the day, of which 164 firms gained, 117 issues lost and 99 companies remained unchanged.

Shares of Beximco Limited were the most-traded by value on the DSE as its shares worth Tk 126.08 crore were traded on the day.

Orion Pharma, which was the second most-traded stock, had a turnover of Tk 50.56 crore followed by Delta Life, LafargeHolcim, BSC, Olympic Industries, Metro Spinning, Malek Spinning, Saif Power and Titas Gas.

Meanwhile, the overall index CASPI of the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) increased over 122 points to 18,512 and securities worth Tk 32.72 crore were traded on the day.
