The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is looking for an Assistant Scientist for it's Socioeconomic Market and Gender Research initiative. 

The organisation published a job circular in this regard in bdjobs and other platforms. 

The position will be based at IRRI's country office in Dhaka and will be open to Bangladeshi nationals only.

Roles and Responsibilities Purpose

  • Work with the project management team and private partners and specialists to ensure strong integration of socio-economic, market system, and gender research with a coherent approach to achieving the strategic objectives of the project.
  • Facilitate the planning, designing and implementation of qualitative and quantitative surveys and other activities related to PPP II Rice Breeding Project .
  • Collect and analyze socioeconomic, markets and gender data using appropriate and advanced statistical methods and tools to achieve the project objectives.
  • Contribute to the development of scientific publications, communication products and research proposals including review of related literature, selection of adequate research tools and sampling methods, verification of suggested methodologies and establishment of parameters.
  • Assist in strengthening the technical capacity of IRRI and its partners to use advanced tools and methods for Socio-economic Market and Gender research


Engagement

  • Constantly communicate with internal and external project partners and collaborators to gather feedback and to exchange conceptual ideas and other research-related requirements for the advancement of the project.
  • Maintain regular contact with the HQ and other Country Office specialists and partners to ensure activities are implemented as planned and reporting deadlines are regularly met.
  • Organize regular meetings with partners and stakeholders to discuss, streamline and implement activities.
  • Provide assistance and guidelines to internal and external partners considering the implementation of surveys and other research activities, including logistics.
  • Constantly monitor, evaluate and provide recommendations to improve research activities/tasks performed by survey enumerators and partner staff in order to maintain smooth conduct of mixed-methods surveys as well as to foster a productive working environment.
  • Coordinate with required IRRI services and supplies to ensure smooth implementation of surveys.
  • Assist implementing partners in organizing trainings or demonstrations


Delivery

  • Undertake literature reviews, prepare contextual analysis based on the program/project research needs.
  • Prepare and submit updated research outputs in a timely manner.
  • Evaluate, validate and contribute to the interpretation of results contributing to the writing of manuscripts for reports/publications as well as presentations/posters for national and international conferences.
  • Contribute to publishing research results in high quality disciplinary and interdisciplinary journals.
  • Supervise and lead the maintenance of accurate data recording and update database for efficient storage and retrieval of information
  • Contribute to capacity building of IRRI staff and project partners
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor from time to time


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics, development economics, or social sciences; preferred disciplines include applied economics, sociology and rural sociology, anthropology, market research and or gender studies, which provides suitable basic knowledge; and minimum 5 years relevant work experience.
  • or a Master’s Degree in Agricultural Economics, development economics, or social sciences; preferred disciplines include applied economics, sociology and rural sociology, anthropology, market research and or  gender studies which provides suitable basic knowledge; and 3 years relevant work experience
  • or a PhD degree on socio-economic, market or gender research and experience of working in an international work environment


Skills Required

  • Has strong knowledge and extensive experience in research on socio-economic, market and gender
  • Has deep understanding of mixed methods researches
  • Has strong knowledge and experience in designing questionnaires, planning and implementing surveys, and conducting focus group discussions. 
  • Has strong knowledge and experience in collecting and managing survey data and analyzing socioeconomic data using appropriate and advanced statistical methods and tools
  • Has strong knowledge and experience in using online survey tools such as SurveyBe, KoboCollect, etc.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Computer literate and proficient in qualitative and quantitative data analysis using software such as SPSS and STATA.
  • Has good presentation skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Has ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Can effectively establish priorities and meet deadlines
  • Excellent technical report and journal article writing skill.


Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh

Salary Ranges: Basic (54,883  - 101,167) BDT per Month

Other Benefits: Housing Allowance: 30% of base pay per month, Transport Allowance: 12,000 BDT, Festival Bonus: 2 times each year, Contributory Provident Fund (CPF), Returning Mother Allowance: BDT-1,000 per month for 9 months to female employees post-delivery of a baby to support return to the workplace, Medical insurance coverage: maximum US$16,000/year and other admissible benefits.
