The country’s stock market is caught in a vicious circle of decline with the already thinning turnover in the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) plunging to a massive low on Tuesday along with all indices.
On the day, turnover fell to Tk 560 crore amid a continuous price fall, which is creating more panic among investors.
The DSE had a turnover or amount of money traded of Tk 560 crore, which is about Tk 154 crore less than the previous working day.
This turnover is the lowest in the last 73 sessions or 3 months and 18 days. Earlier, on July 28, the DSE traded lower than this. The turnover on that day was Tk 441.77 crore.
Finally, DSE’s key index DSEX decreased by 35 points or 0.56 percent to settle the day at 6,218 points.
Among other indices, the shariah-based DSES fell by 11 points or 0.83 percent and the blue-chip DS-30 was down by 15 points or 0.70 percent.
Shares of the 319 companies traded on the day, of which only 24 firms gained, 61 issues lost and 234 companies remained unchanged.
The pharmaceuticals and chemicals sector rose to the top position in terms of transactions. The total turnover in this sector was Tk 113.91 crore, which is 21.94 percent of the total turnover.
The IT sector was at the second position with Tk 98.68 crore turnover, followed by paper and printing sector at Tk 54.4 crore.
Shares of Genex Infosys were the most-traded by value on the DSE as its shares worth Tk 62.90 crore were traded on the day.
Orion Pharma, which was the second most-traded stock, had a turnover of Tk 42.03 crore followed by Bashundhara Paper Mills, Navana Pharmaceuticals, Eastern Housing, KDS Accessories, Intraco, Summit Alliance Port, Sea Pearl and Orion Infusion.
Meanwhile, the overall index CASPI of the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) decreased over 48 points to 18,482 and securities worth Tk 13.12 crore were traded on the day.
