The government has given permission to four companies to import eggs in a bid to control the price hike of eggs in the country’s local markets.
The four companies are Tiger Enterprise, Mrs Mim Enterprise, Arnob Trading and Prime Energy, said a notification the Ministry of Commerce issued on Sunday.
The four companies can import the eggs only from countries free from bird-flu and influenza-free countries.
Amid the skyrocketing price hike of eggs, the government on September 14 fixed the price per piece of egg at Tk 12.
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on that day said that the government would allow egg importation unless the price comes down and the traders comply with the fixed price.
To make the efforts a success, the National Directorate of Consumers Rights Protection carried out raids at different markets in the capital Dhaka but failed to enforce the government-fixed price of eggs.
In this circumstance, the government has allowed the four companies to import four crore eggs to keep the price under control.
