Fair price makes jute growers happy in Panchagarh

Jute farmers in the district are happy due to its good production and fair prices in the local markets during the ongoing harvesting season.

Now the jute farmers are seen busy cutting and processing the crop with much enthusiasm in the district as harvesting is going on in full swing.

The new jute has appeared in the local hat and Bazar, reports BSS.

Farmers and agro officials expect to exceed the production target as the crop grew well and its cultivation area was higher than the target.

Per mound (40-kg) jute is being sold at Tk 3,000 to Tk 3,200. Traders from different districts come here and buy jute as per their demand and send those to different Jute Mills across the country.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) of Panchagarh sources said jute was cultivated on 10,000 hectares of land in the district this year with a production target of 20.18 bells.

Farmer Selim of Sabouspara village said: "I cultivate jute on one bigha of land. Around eight maunds of jute were produced from per bigha (33 decimal) of land and I earned Tk 14,000 by selling jute after mitigating all expenditure."

Deputy Director of the DAE, Panchagarh Abdul Motin said that Jute production has been good as the weather condition is favorable this year.

The department has given training on uses of modern technologies to the farmers for boosting its production, he added.

Besides, the farmers got jute seeds, and fertilizers from the department free of cost.
