PM directs for speedy execution of East-West Expressway

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed for speedy implementation of the East-West Expressway to prevent vehicles from entering the capital Dhaka.

At the same time, she gave instructions to set up kitchen markets a little far to avoid perishable products being carried to downtown Dhaka.

PM Hasina gave the instructions at the annual performance agreement ceremony after a virtual cabinet meeting on Sunday, said Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam.

The cabinet secretary said, “The PM has given a specific instruction that if we cannot ensure good governance, nothing would be possible.”

Moreover, the PM gave a long speech in Parliament on June 30. There she gave a detailed lecture on Padma Bridge and stressed on two issues. One is that the transportation through the Padma Bridge has been approved in the strategic transport plan. Also, she asked authorities to implement the East West Elevated Expressway soon, so that no vehicle enters Dhaka city.

While talking about the second issue, the secretary said, “As we have developed a connection with the South and the South-West, huge quantities of goods will now start arriving in Dhaka or Chittagong. Thus, if we distribute the perishable products not only in Karwan Bazar but also on the other side of Keraniganj, Sayedabad, Aminbazar or Mohakhali, we will get relief from traffic jams and have a clean city.”

He further said that this would be implemented immediately as per PM’s instruction.

Besides, DPP is being done at the end of the feasibility study of East-West Elevated Expressway. PM Hasina has ordered for the completion of the DPP soon.

The cabinet secretary also added that because of the corona, a 1,500- bedded hospital was built at Mohakhali. “So if necessary, more hospitals will be constructed at Keraniganj, Aminbazar, and in Kanchpur areas. However, the local government department is already working on them.”
