Anita Chowdhury, the wife of Square Group founder Samson H Chowdhury, died on Sunday at Square Hospital aged 90.
She was undergoing treatment for her old age complications, according to a statement issued by the Square Group.
Anita, who is known as Square Mata (mother), is survived by her four children and a number of grandchildren.
Her son Samuel S Chowdhury is the current chairman of Square Group and daughter Ratna Patra is vice chairman of Square Pharma, while sons Tapan Chowdhury is the managing director of Square Pharma and Anjan Chowdhury is the managing director of Square Toiletries.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Anita Chowdhury.
She prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Sunday also expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Anita Chowdhury.
In a message of condolence, the minister said she played a unique role in running the Square Group by giving directives.
