In a surprise move, BJP leader Biplab Kumar Deb resigned as Tripura Chief Minister on Saturday, Bangla daily newspaper Anandabazar reports.
Deb submitted his resignation to Governor Satyadeo Narain Arya at the Raj Bhawan in Agartala.
There were news reports that Biplab had been going through a rift with the BJP’s leadership. Often, he was criticised for his controversial comments.
“Party is above all. I was given charge of being the party’s state president by former BJP chief Amit Shah. I tried to work for the betterment of Tripura, both as a party chief and as chief minister. I have tried to do justice for the people of Tripura in whichever responsibility was given to me,” Indian Express reports quoting Deb who spoke to reporters in front of Raj Bhawan on Saturday.
BJP is expected to meet later on Saturday to elect a new chief minister.
Tripura, a neighbouring state of Bangladesh, will go for Assembly elections early next year.
