Diego Maradona’s jersey from his infamous “Hand of God” match in the 1986 World Cup has set the record for the most expensive game-worn jersey of all time, reports Sports Illustrated.

The Le Coq Sportif Argentina jersey sold for $9.3 million at an auction conducted by Sotheby’s. Earlier, a Babe Ruth jersey was on top as the most expensive jersey. Ruth was an American professional baseball player.

Maradona opened the scoring against England with the help of his hand and in the very match, he netted the “Goal of the Century” for Argentina. Later, they won the match by 2–1 in the World Cup quarterfinals.

While the information on the buyer has yet to be released, the jersey was put up for auction by former England midfielder Steve Hodge, who swapped shirts with Maradona after the game.

The Argentine legend won the Golden Boot at the 1986 World Cup. He died in November 2020 at the age of 60.
