After the successful completion of a cyber security drill exclusively designed for the country’s financial institutions, the government in a new move is going to host a similar drill, this time on a national level, marking the Digital Bangladesh Day this month.

The government's e-Government Computer Incident Response Team (BGD e-GOV CIRT) will host the two-day drill – to be held online remotely – on December 12-13, in order to build resilience and capacity for handling threats on cyberspace.

Officials of the information technology (IT) department of any organisation can take part in it. Students and people in general who want to build a career in cyber security can gain skills by taking part in it as a team, according to the Bangladesh Computer Council under which BGD e-GOV CIRT operates.

To participate, one has to register on the website of CIRT. Starting on November 18, the registration will continue till December 7.

According to CIRT, people involved in different sectors are being cyber-attacked every day, causing financial loss, information theft or personal security.

In order to increase the security on cyberspace, different organisations are now hiring skilled cyber security professionals; though the demand for skilled people in this sector has increased, there is a shortage of experts.

CIRT has taken the initiative of cyber drill to increase the number of skilled professionals in this sector, it added.

Earlier, on October 22, BGD e-GOV CIRT successfully organised 1st cyber drill – designed for the personnel of financial institutions only. Twenty banks and 15 non-banking financial institutions took part in the drill. Each organisation was given six problems and a timeframe to come up with solutions. The main goal of the drill was to sharpen skills during incident handling.

NCC Bank got the highest score of 85 in dealing with cyber risks. Pubali Bank and the Information Technology Consultant Limited clinched second and third positions respectively.

In addition, Bangladesh Bank stood 4th, IFIC Bank 5th, Janata Bank 6th, BRAC Net 8th, Bangladesh Commerce Bank 8th, Cyber Defenders 9th and National Telecommunication Monitoring Center (NTMC) 10th.
