With the last span of Padma bridge installed on Thursday, today (Friday) marks the end of another week.

Last span of Padma bridge installed

While the local media made a thorough coverage of the installation of the last span on pillars 12 and 13 of the Padma bridge, Chinese outlet Xinhua didn’t miss it by any means. 

The news agency covered it with a stunning aerial photo of the last span.

Xinhua, in its report, mentioned that the Chinese contractor MBEC said it attached utmost importance to environment protection during building the bridge and adopted international standards concerning health, safety and environmental assessment. 

It also added that it used underwater sonar for noise index measurement in order to control the noise generated in the piling works to protect vulnerable local animals. 

EU provides €113 million to support Bangladeshi RMG workers

just-style, an online news and research portal for the apparel and textile industry covered the news that mentioned Bangladesh getting a grant worth €113 million from the European Union (EU) to support the country’s readymade garment workers.

EU came up with the grant since cancelled orders due to the Covid-19 pandemic have caused the workers not getting wage in this time of global crisis. 

Child marriage escapee becomes martial arts champion

Published on Wednesday, the report focuses on Santwana Roy, a 36-year-old woman who escaped from her house on the age of 16 when her parents asked her to marry a man from a wealthier family. 

Written by Slavery and Trafficking Correspondent of Reuters Naimul Karim, the article can be considered as a small biography of the brave Santwana Roy. 

Santwana is now an internationally-recognised taekwondo champion and it using martial arts to fight child marriage, that has surged during the pandemic. 

UN, US, urge safety assessment of Bhashanchar

A UN human rights investigator urged Bangladesh on Thursday to allow a safety assessment of the remote island Bhashan Char where the Bangladeshi government shipped 1,600 Rohingya refugees last week, reports Reuters.

Quoting the United Nations, the report, published on Thursday, further said that UN has not been allowed to conduct a technical and safety assessment of Bhasan char. 

The report mentioned the island as “flood-prone” in the Bay of Bengal quoting the UN.

Bangladesh approving Tk2,228 crore road project

Surprisingly enough, the news of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) of Bangladesh approving a road project worth Tk 2,228 crore made it to Chinese news agency Xinhua.

Quoting government officials, the report further mentions that the approved project, which aims to widen the existing road between Munshiganj and Narayanganj will establish a smoother communication between the two districts.
