Prime Minister of Nepal Khadga Prasad Oli lost a vote of confidence in the country’s parliament on Monday.
During the vote, only 93 lawmakers of the parliament backed the PM while 124 voted against him, showing that he clearly does not have enough support to remain in office anymore.
Meanwhile, a new rival faction within his governing party abstained, reports AP.
Noe, the Nepalese President Bidhya Devi Bhandari is likely to ask the PM to lead a caretaker government while the parties in parliament seek to form a new government.
Khadga Prasad Oli did not make any comments in this regard till now.
In late 2017, his Nepal Communist Party won elections and he was chosen prime minister by the parliament early of 2018.
But a split in his party earlier in March this year had already weakened him, forcing him to lead a minority government. Things became much worse for him when a new split emerged this week.
The Nepalese PM had been hardly criticised for his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. The nation reported its highest numbers of new cases and deaths in the past few days.
The authorities have already imposed a lockdown in most parts of the country since last month. The lockdown is likely to extend as hospitals are running out of beds, oxygen and medication.
